Diesel an Overview

Crude oil is distilled into LPG, gasoline (Petrol), naphtha, kerosene, jet fuel, diesel, heavy oil, lubricating oil, etc. Gas (gasoline/petrol) falls into the light distillate category. Diesel falls into the middle distillate category. Diesel engine/gasoline engine powered automobiles convert diesel/ gasoline into energy by a cycle of minute explosions or combustions.

According to Wikipedia, CO2 emissions from diesel engines are 73.25 g/MJ, somewhat lower than gasoline powered engine at 73.38 g/MJ


Diesel engines work on compression ignition principle, therefore diesel releases higher energy. For example: Gasoline engines compress at a ratio of 8:1, while diesel engines compress at a ratio of 14:1 to 18:1. Therefore, diesel engine emissions are somewhat lower than a gasoline powered engine.

A block is where all the basic internal combustion process happens. This is where the linear motion is created.

Pistons move up and down in the cylinder due to the combustion process. Its purpose is to transfer the expanding gas force to the crankshaft.

Valves are necessary as it allows the combustion gases to escape and lets the fresh air to enter the cylinder. Generally, a diesel engine has two exhaust valves and two intake valves.

These complex fuel injectors precisely spray diesel into the cylinder with controlled timing.
